Catalogue Note
The function of an aquamanile was to hold water for the purpose of washing one's hands. Originally used in ecclesiastical contexts, by the late twelfth century they were also found in noble domestic settings. The water would have been filled into the hinged aperture, which now has a later lid, at the top of the head, with the poured water issuing from the lion's mouth.
