Catalogue Note

In the Middle Ages, relics or other treasures often were preserved in strongboxes in the ridge beams of churches. The beams were cut out in the form of little houses, repeating the form of reliquary caskets. Being secured with iron mounts and locks and located in an inaccessible part of the church, the relics thus were best protected against theft.
