Description

  • An Italianate mountainous landscape with travellers and a shepherd with his herd resting in the foreground, near classical ruins and a lake
  • oil on panel
  • 63.1 by 87.6 cm.

Condition

The actual painting is darker in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The panel is cradled and bevelled along the right edge. Frame abrasion is visible along the upper and right edge. A small paint loss in the centre left of the sky. A repaired and retouched scratch of circa 10 cm running from the centre right edge. However, overall the painting is in good condition, the sky is well preserved. The paint layer is under a glossy and slightly discoloured varnish layer. Inspection under UV-light reveals minor retouchings, mainly in the lower half of the painting, e.g. in the foliage to the left, the animals and figures in the foreground and some small retouchings in the architecture. Offered in a gilt ornate wood frame, in good condition (JD).
