Catalogue Note

This first collected edition of Hume's Essays and Treatises "involves the resetting of all separate volumes previously issued, the reissue of the earlier volumes with cancel titles and, where the cancels were not prepared in sufficient numbers, the further reissue of certain volumes with original titles still intact" (Todd). This set consists of the earliest issues of individual volumes I, II and IV (as set out by Todd in Hume and the Enlightenment, 1974, pp.194-6), and the third issue of volume III.
