Catalogue Note

a tall clean copy. The Earl of Orrery (1707-62), to whom this copy was presented, was a friend of Pope and Swift. The inscription by the Earl, which is partially erased, cites a line which refers to "the Orrery" in one of Fitzgerald's poems (p.74), but this is a reference to a mechanical device which illustrates the movement of the planets.
