Description

  • Three illustrations for Treasure Island, comprising:
i) "'Yes, sir,' said he 'this is the spot to be sure; and very prettily drawed out'", 148 by 94mm., signed lower left corner; ii) "A bullet whistled close by his arm", 118 by 97mm. oval, unsigned; iii) "And he and Redruth backed with a great heave that sent her stern bodily under water", 146 by 94mm., signed lower right corner, creased; all ink and watercolour drawings heightened with gouache, mounted, framed and glazed

Catalogue Note

Paget's illustrated edition of Treasure Island was first published by Cassell in November 1899. As published, the illustrations are engraved. These watercolours, presented here, are therefore presumably Paget's original artwork that was sent to the engravers for book publication.
