Description

  • Typed letter signed as Prime Minister, to the Warden of Keble College, Oxford [Harry Carpenter]
informing him of his decision to recommend him as the successor to the recently deceased Bishop of Oxford, Dr Kirk, and asking him to treat his proposal as confidential until royal approval has been obtained, 1 page, 4to, on headed stationery of 10 Downing Street, marked "Confidential" at head, with typed envelope, 29 November 1954



[together with:] a press photograph of churchill signed ("Winston S. Churchill"), a three-quarter length outdoor image showing Churchill formally dressed and holding his hat and cane, ferrotype silver print, 205 x 150mm., signed in blue ink at the foot, [1947], slightly marked and buckled

Condition

Letter: Filing hole at top left corner. Two central folds. In very good condition. Envelope: Minor tears Photo: Gloss print. Slightly buckled (would benefit from glazing and framing). Light surface scratching. Traces of former mounting on brown paper on the reverse. Catalogue Note

Harry Carpenter (1901-1993) succeeded Kenneth E. Kirk (1886-1954) as Bishop of Oxford in 1955.

According to an accompanying note, the press photograph was taken when Churchill received the Freedom of the City of Darlington at a ceremony held at the Society of Apothecaries on 8 May 1947.
