Description
- Autograph letter signed ("Beatrix Potter") to Millie Warne.
Noting that Christmas presents "for the two sets of children" are proving to be puzzling: "I could go to Harrod's toy and book departments on Saturday morning - books are very difficult to choose now; one feels so old fashioned..." The writer also details progress on work at Hill Top Farm: "I have been exceedingly busy - as usual - much interested in the making of a new water tank; it is rather an anxious time of year to be dealing with a large amount of cement, as both rain and frost spoils it..." Potter also reports "a most painful tragedy" noting that she was woken during the night "...at the noise of a poor chicken screaming. It stopped, and it was extremely cold; in short I did not get out of bed. I went directly I got up and found a horrid big old rat in the hutch on the lawn. It was eating the chicken and had hurt two others... The dogs killed the rat; and the lame ones are recovering..." She finishes with plans for her pig: "...we are not going to kill the porker till January. I shall distribute chops - to such as like pig - at a later date than Christmas..." (4 pages, 8vo, Hill Top Farm, Sawrey, Ambleside, 16 December 1912), some browning, folded
