Catalogue Note

This is a rough wash drawing for the finished drawing now held by The Free Library of Philadelphia. (See Hobbs, Beatrix Potter's Art (London, 1989), p.92 and Hobbs, Beatrix Potter - Artist & Illustrator (London, 2005), p.53).

Hobbs notes that "ferns in the high wall and Mycena-like fungi in the foreground contribute to a sensation of claustrophobia and damp". Both ferns and fungi are omitted from the rough sketch.
