Catalogue Note
This illustration is connected to the "Three Little Mice sat down to spin" series (see lot 296). A drawing presented to Bertha Mahony, editor of Horn Book Magazine, in the late 1920s, is dated March 1892 and includes a more developed version of this crouching cat. (The illustration in now in the Cotsen Children's Library, Princeton University).
This fine drawing reveals a number of erased attempts at the cat's tail. The panelling is perhaps reminiscent of Bedwell Lodge.
