- The Cat's Meat Man
approx 200 by 270mm. on two leaves, pencil drawing, unsigned, annotated "Rough Sketch. The cats meat man.", mounted, some spotting, browning and soiling
Condition
The image is on two separate leaves. The extremities of the leaves have a small number of closed tears. The image shows some spotting and browning. There is some soiling to the margins or outer parts of the image.

Catalogue Note
Hobbs, in her essay 'Art into Books' (Beatrix Potter: Sources of her Inspiration [Beatrix Potter Studies XII] (Beatrix Potter Society, 2007)), notes that "The Cat's Meat Man" comprises "a double-sided toy picture... given to Noel Moore in May 1895; Potter also began to paint the same subject in oils. The image stayed in her memory, and thirty years later its central part metamorphosed into the 'fisher-cart', a line drawing in The Fairy Caravan".
An unfinished version in oils of the 'fisher-cart' is present in the V&A collection (V&A953). The double-sided picture originally given to Noel Moore is in a private collection.
