Catalogue Note
Helen Jacobs (1888-1970) studied art at West Ham Municipal College. Her published work includes illustrations in both pen and ink, and also watercolour for both books and periodicals. She exhibited at the Royal Academy and The Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour. Towards the end of her career she provided illustrations for an extensive number of educational book titles, as represented here in the books retold and edited by Constance M. Martin in "The Riverside Series" and "The Golden Readers" series.
Constance M. Martin's retold and edited version of Charles Kingsley's The Water-Babies was the second volume in the "Riverside" series published by Philip and Tacey in the mid 1930s. The original edition was published with wrappers printed in black and red. The coloured drawings were presumably used for later editions. Martins Press appear to have taken over the series in the 1940s.
