Description

  • Autograph letter signed, to the poet and editor of the periodical Wales, Keidrych Rhys
expressing amused contempt for a story in the latest issue of Wales by S.G. Leonard ("whose story was uniquely atrocious & reached the real, great heights of bad writing. I enjoyed it enormously...") and asking whether it could be a "legpull" ("if so, I'd love to meet him. Love to meet him anyway"); referring to Rhys' wife, the poet Lynette Roberts, whose verse he would like to read for possible use at a poetry evening, and to the writer Nigel Heseltine ("...he still sucks your brains and batters you for information..."); claiming that Rhys has "done more real work for living poetry in Wales than anyone else"; and signing off with a string of arcane adjectives to describe his sickly state ("...stereoraceous, lateritic, phthisic, mephitic, canicular..."); in a sidenote Thomas mentions the Anglo-Welsh writer Glyn Jones and the pub landlord Ebby Williams, and promises to "try very hard" to visit Rhys ("...it's difficult, the fares are too much for Caitlin and me..."); 1 page, 4to, on lined paper, "The Literary Village", [Laugharne], 5 August [1939], light foxing, slight creasing, a few small marginal tears not affecting text
