Description
- Manuscript of his book "A Hind in Richmond Park" and other material, comprising:
i) working manuscript of "a hind in richmond park", preserving several different stages of the text: loose pages of autograph manuscript mostly paperclipped together in chapters of about 15-25 pages each, corresponding to Chapters III to XVI and conclusion of the printed book; a 20 page autograph notebook with a draft of the conclusion; complete typescript of the book except the conclusion, with extensive autograph corrections and revisions, mostly paperclipped into chapters; various smaller fragments of the text in manuscript and typescript; altogether about 420 pages of autograph manuscript and 300 pages of typescript, 4to and 8vo, [early 1920s], housed in a box-file, some pages frayed and torn
ii) two autograph notebooks by Hudson containing drafts of articles for newspaper, about 235 pages, oblong 8vo, 1904-1909, and a third notebook in another hand; also a typescript of his poem, 'The Old Man of Kensington Gardens', 23 pages, 4to, and other works by Hudson in print and typescript, all housed in a box with items iii and iv
iii) 16 autograph letters signed and 1 typed letter signed by Hudson, to his publisher Joseph Malaby Dent, mostly on his work and the publication of his books ("...nothing I have done interests me: the one and only thing I am interested in is the book I have not written..."), one letter with an extended discussion of John James Audubon, 34 pages, chiefly 4to, 21 December 1916 to 3 July 1922, with retained carbon copies of many of Dent's letters to Hudson; also 14 letters by the publisher E.P. Dutton to Dent concerning the publication of Hudson's books in the United States, July-November 1921, with retained carbon copies of Dent's letters to Dutton; and five letters by Margaret Brooke, Ranee of Sarawak to Dent, concerning Morley Roberts's biography of Hudson, March to November 1923, with retained carbon copies of Dent's letters; as well as various typescipt copies of letters by Hudson, including about 60 to Linda Gardiner, and 93 to Mrs Phillips and Mrs Hudson of the RSPB
iv) articles about Hudson including Philip Gosse, 'W.H. Hudson: An Impression', galley-proof; also a file of correspondence, photographs and other material relating to a memorial plaque at 40 St Luke's Road, Westbourne Park, London; and other related material
v) a collection of 50 printed books by and about Hudson, including: Birds of La Plata, J.M. Dent and Sons, 1920, 2 volumes, with 22 illustrations by H. Gronvold, one of 3000 copies--153 Letters from W.H. Hudson ... edited by Edward Garnett, Nonesuch Press, 1923--Idle Days in Patagonia, Chapman and Hall, 1893, one of 1750 copies (full listing available on request)

the manuscript of hudson's final work together with other material, mostly concerning his publisher j.m. dent. A Hind in Richmond Park was complete except for the final chapter at Hudson's death in August 1922. It was completed and edited by Morley Roberts, and published by J.M. Dent in November 1922.
