Catalogue Note
The series, issued by Oscar Mellor's Fantasy Press, comprised thirty-five pamphlets each presenting the work of a single poet. Elizabeth Jennings, Geoffrey Hill, A. Alvarez, Thom Gunn, Donald Davie, Philip Larkin, Kingsley Amis were all featured. The series was edited by Michael Shanks, Oscar Mellor, Donald Hall, George Macbeth, Anthony Thwaite and Bernard Bergonzi. This set includes occasional ownership marks by one of the editors.
John Cotton in his article, 'The Fantasy Poets', The Private Library, Spring 1969, pp.3-13, notes that 'between 150 to 300 copies of each pamphlet were produced. There were no second editions, for copyright reasons and mainly because all were hand set and the press never possessed enough type for more than four pages of poetry if the poems were short...'
