Catalogue Note

The caricaturist Henry Major (1889-1948) was born in a poor district of Budapest but moved to Paris at the age of nineteen, where he drew for Paris-Match. He later drew for The Graphic in the 1920s (probably around the time he drew these portraits of Conrad), before settling in New York from 1925 onwards, where he caricatured many artists, writers and statesmen, and worked as staff caricaturist on the Hearst newspapers. His paintings gained great popularity after his death when published as prints in the "Gay Philosopher" series.
