8vo, 2 volumes, first edition, presentation copy inscribed by the author on half-title ("To Mrs. Hill -- | affectionately -- | Henry James | Oct: 8th 1896."), advertisements at the end, original light blue diagonal-fine-ribbed cloth, lettered in gilt on the upper cover and spine, circular ornament in blind on upper cover, publisher's device in blind on lower cover, preserved in quarter blue morocco folding box, some very slight browning or foxing to endpapers, minor wear to edges of binding and spine, hinge of volume 1 starting

Catalogue Note
inscribed a week after publication. The Other House, the only Henry James novel to centre around a murder, was published on 1st October 1896, in an edition of 600 copies, having previously appeared as a serial in the Illustrated London News the same year. This copy has one of a number of variant advertisements (no apparent priority), comprising 32 undated, unnumbered pages, with the recto of the first leaf advertising Hall Caine's The Maxman.
