Catalogue Note
extremely rare: no copy in NSTC, BLIC, or COPAC. There are two copies in American libraries (Yale and Princeton), but none in the UK.
This is the losing entry in the competition for the Chancellor's Medal for Poetry at Cambridge in 1829, alongside the author's great friend Alfred Tennyson's own winning entry (see lot 172).
Hallam's and Tennyson's intimate friendship at Cambridge was, of course, immortalised in the latter's In Memoriam (see lot 171 etc.). Hallam's authorship of Timbuctoo was only established by the publication of the Remains, edited by his father Henry, in 1934 (see lot 166). There is, suitably enough given his profound influence on Hallam's own writing, an epigraph by Wordsworth at the beginning of the poem
