Catalogue Note
from the descendants of elizabeth barrett browning's nephew, General Sir Edward Altham. According to the present owners, this desk was kept in Robert Browning's study in his Kensington home, 29 De Vere Gardens. It was probably used for letter-writing (his main writing desk was sold at Sotheby's in 1913). Robert and Elizabeth Barrett Browning's son Pen was given this desk when he married; he then gave it to his cousin Edward Altham.
