A fine copy, with distinguished provenance, of  the collected poems of the first historian of English poetry and Poet Laureate, Thomas Warton, the younger (1728-1790).  According to Sydney Cockerell's note in this copy, "[t]his posthumous edition was prepared for press by [Warton] before his death".

A resourceful and versatile poet, Warton was one of the most celebrated figures of eighteenth-century Oxford, a prominent member of the Literary Club, and the principal agent in obtaining the degree of M.A. for Samuel Johnson. Poet Laureate from 1785, he was not considered a wholly successful imbumbent, his official odes on royal topics attracting a fair degree of mockery.
