8vo, 2 volumes,  first edition, one of 135 copies on imperial paper, with the advertisement leaf ("rarely preserved", according to Cross), contemporary calf gilt, some slight marginal browning,  edges and corners slightly worn, tear to endpaper at end of volume 1

Catalogue Note

first edition of sterne's second (and last) novel, on fine paper.

The first edition of A Sentimental Journey was issued in two styles, wiith 2500 copies printed on ordinary paper and 135 on fine or imperial paper. Cross notes that "in some copies appears an Advertisement promising that the work will be completed the next year. Being originally a loose sheet, to be inserted in copies of either of the two styles, this Advertisement was rarely preserved".
