8vo, 23rd printing, presentation copy inscribed by the author to tom rand, stage manager of the 1964 London production ("For Tom | with gratitude and all | good wishes from Sam | Paris Jan. 1965"), paper wrappers, very light dust-staining at edges of wrappers
[together with:] two autograph letters and a card signed by beckett to tom rand, the first letter asking for a copy of the prompt script of Waiting for Godot ("as it stands, without our notes & changes") to be sent to Alan Clodd for use in the Berlin production of 1965, and thanking Tom Rand for his work on the London production the previous year; the second letter reassuring him that despite the absence of an annotated script he was able to remember most of the movements and cuts for the Berlin production of Waiting for Godot "which was finally a very disappointing affair in spite of all our efforts", thanking him again for his work in the London production, and saying he hopes he is enjoying Happy End, the Brecht musical which was the next production at the Royal Court; 2 pages in all, 4to, two autograph envelopes, Paris, 2 January and 2 March 1965; with a card sent the day after the opening night with some cash "to buy yourself & the boys a drink", and to thank Tom Rand for "the great job you did for us", [December 1964]

Catalogue Note
The Royal Court Theatre production of Waiting for Godot, for which Tom Rand was the stage manager, was directed by Anthony Page in the winter of 1964. Nicol Williamson was, according to Beckett, "extraordinary" as Vladimir ("...I have never heard anybody do Vladimir's speech so that it ended up as a trumpet call..."). Alfred Lynch was Estragon, while Lucky and Pozzo were played by Jack MacGowran and Paul Curran.
