Catalogue Note

In this uncommon 1802 edition (seven copies listed in COPAC) one of the five Coleridge poems is withdrawn ("The Dungeon"), Wordsworth omits "A Character" and "Lines written near Richmond", and the famous preface – in effect the manifesto for the Romantic movement – is considerably expanded, from 46 to 66 pages. In addition Coleridge abandons his "Argument" for "The Ancient Mariner", and three poems were moved from the first to the second volume, as well as numerous revisions being made to the text of poems.
