small 4to (173 x 128mm), first edition, woodcut head-pieces and initials, Amory's no.4‡ issue, with no note from the printer to the reader on [P]A2r, and signatures Z and VV in their original settings (with readings "illustrous" and "farr"), but with the title page from Amory's no.3 issue (traditional fifth title page, with "Angel" in roman), modern antique style speckled calf gilt by Baytun's of Bath, red morocco label on the spine, all edges gilt, some borders and signatures slightly shaved, somewhat spotted and soiled, B4 stained and repaired at outer edge

Catalogue Note
A mixed issue. The preliminary material printed to accompany the fourth state title page (1668) was revised to accompany the second of the 1669 title pages, distinguishable by the fact that -- as here -- Simmons's address to the reader does not appear at the head of the argument. However there is no clear-cut relationship betweeen title pages and preliminaries, and -- as here also -- quite often copies appeared with earlier versions of title pages and revised preliminaries, or vice versa.
