Description

  • A small collection of autograph material, comprising:
i) 'Foreword' [to Peter Rabbit Music Books by Christopher Le Fleming], autograph manuscript signed "Beatrix Potter" comprising 83 words on single leaf with a few revisions, 8vo, some soiling, and rust-staining; ii) Autograph letter signed ("H.B. Heelis") to [Christopher] Le Fleming explaining that she has sent two or three samples of illustration to her publishers but she is "not sure about size and style of drawing, for lithography" and that "I am quite keen on the work and do not reject it – but my hand does shake" (1 page, 4to, Sawrey, 18 August 1935), some creases and rust-staining; iii) Autograph letter signed ("Beatrix Heelis") to her niece Esther [Nicholson] discussing exam failure ("What a catastrophe! ...You should certainly have another try... but do not try with insufficient preparation...") and noting "I know so little about exams I felt afraid of meddling". She states the opinion of her husband on the matter (noting that he "kept a ferret in his desk at school") before giving an account of her current circumstances ("...I have a horrible book on hand that should have been done in June; and I have also a large interesting farm, no servant, and an epidemic of measels; some anxiety about my poor old mother, who has had a great shock in losing my brother...") (2 pages, 4to, Sawrey, 16 July 1918), some creases and minor spotting
