Catalogue Note

Potter first started this tale in 1909 but it was abandoned until 1929 when it was rewritten to form part of The Fairy Caravan but then omitted. In 1940 publication within The Horn Book Magazine was being considered and the text was revised again. By the time the tale was included in the twentieth anniversary number of The Horn Book Magazine in May 1944 it had become a posthumous publication.
