folio (271 x 182mm.), Black Letter, titles within woodcut borders (McKerrow and Ferguson 76), woodcut illustrations, woodcut initials and tailpieces, occasional near-contemporary manuscript marginalia and a couple of pencil notes by a reader in 1795, contemporary London blind-stamped calf (see Oldham, English Blind-Stamped Bindings rolls 772 and 775, "1548-80"), rebacked and re-edged with roan, lacking 3R4 and blank leaves B4, 2H1 and 3A1, E1 and E4 supplied in pen facsimile, title-page remargined with some loss to woodcut and text on verso, A3 torn (repaired) with some loss of text, margins of quires A-E and 3R strengthened, occasionally affecting headlines, small tear in 2M3 affecting a few letters, other small marginal tears (repaired), small rust hole in 2V1 affecting a few letters, worming affecting printed marginalia of a dozen leaves, occasional spotting and staining, binding scraped, rebacked and re-edged, lacking central metal bosses

Catalogue Note
The first collected edition of the works of William Tyndale, together with those of two other English martyrs, John Frith and Robert Barnes. Frith had been with Tyndale in Marburg and helped him with his Bible. Barnes, an Austin Friar, became a friend of Luther after fleeing England but later returned as one of Cromwell's protégés. After Cromwell's arrest in 1540 he was burned at the stake.
