Description
- A collection of four autograph letters together with other material relating to the Hawkshead and District Nursing Association, comprising:

(2 pages, 4to, Castle Cottage Sawrey, 25 March 1930); ii) autograph letter (?incomplete) unsigned by Beatrix Potter to Benita [Fisher] reporting on a visit during which boundaries for the nursing association were discussed and the possible provision of a car ("Unless we can get rid of those 6 cottages on either side of Oxenfell-crossroads there is no great object in ridding ourselves of the ascent of the hill and bungalows at Shelworth...") (2 pages, 8vo, Castle Cottage Sawrey, 15 November 1937); iii) autograph letter signed ("Beatrix Heelis") to Dr [W.E.] Henderson (of Westmorland County Council) writing "on behalf of the Hawkshead and District Nursing Association" about geographical boundaries for the nursing association (2 pages, 4to, Castle Cottage Sawrey, 5 May 1941); iv) autograph letter signed ("H.B. Heelis") to Dr [W.] Alcock (of Westmorland County Council) explaining that she has "no right to commit my committee" but states her personal view on boundaries and notes "it is the worst time to try to put more work on these nurses; there has been a rush of evacuees... I do not know how the districts can cope with them..." (1 page, 4to, Castle Cottage Sawrey, 8 May 1941)--together with single page of printed rules (annotated by Potter "Abridged leaflet of rules..."); report and balance sheet for 1929 (annotated by Potter "Acts made up in December to year end"), together with three other letters and a note by others associated with the Association, some rust staining, occasional pin holes and minor resulting tears

Catalogue Note
Beatrix Potter was Honorary Treasurer and on the executive committee for the Hawkshead and District Nursing Association. These letters reveal her engaging with Westmorland County Council and show her actively participating in the running of the nursing association. (Letters to Celia N. Edwards, a district nurse mentioned in this collection, were sold in these rooms in July 2007 and December 2007).
