Catalogue Note
This unfinished watercolour shows a scene presumably intended for The Tale of Pigling Bland. It appears that Potter was working on the book for around three years (with publication in 1913). This long period of creativity coupled to the new publishing format from Warne's which used fewer coloured plates may account for abandoned scenes. Curiously, the V&A Collection does not, apparently, include a significant quantity of material for Pigling Bland.
