A selection of Kipling's stories and poems were first published with the title Animal Stories from Rudyard Kipling by Macmillan in 1932. It contained numerous black and white ink illustrations and eight coloured plates by Stuart Tresilian. It was, it appears, the illustrator's first published book and his career would include other Kipling books (and, famously, dust-jacket illustrations for Enid Blyton's 'Adventure' series). One of the illustrations offered here was used, (in black and white only), as representative of the artist in Alan Horne's Dictionary of 20th Century British Book Illustrators (Woodbridge: Antique Collector's Club, 1994).
