- Printed circular letter signed "yours affectionately | C.L. Dodgson" to Florence and Mabel Burton requesting addresses of any stationers to whom the writer should send "a specimen-copy of my new Stamp-Case" together with his "'8 or 9 Wise Words', written to accompany it". The writer further asks if the recipients can "mention it (in terms as favourable as you honestly can) to the said Stationers, and to any of your friends..." (1 page, 8vo, printed Christ Church address deleted and replaced by Eastbourne, 10 July 1890 together with envelope), minor tear at head, tears and loss to envelope
The printed letter is annotated in Dodgson's distinctive purple ink.

Catalogue Note
Dodgson first met Mabel Amy Burton in August 1877 in Eastbourne. He recorded in his diary that "Mabel herself is entirely charming, and without an atom of shyness: I never became friends with a child so easily or so quickly." (see ed. Edward Wakeling, Lewis Carroll's Diaries, volume 7, 2003, p. 60). Wakeling notes that Florence Burton was born in 1856 and Mabel Burton in 1869.
