Clare Winsten, like Isaac Rosenberg, was brought up in the east end of London. They both studied at the Slade School of Art with, amongst others, Mark Gertler and David Bomberg. Clara Birnberg, as Winsten was known then, was the only woman to be included in the Jewish section of the 1914 Whitechapel Art Gallery's exhibition, Twentieth Century Art: a Review of Modern Movements, curated by Bornberg and Jacob Epstein.

This portrait made in 1915 is the last of three drawings by Birnberg of Rosenberg. The other two, drawn in 1913 and 1914, are in the British Museum and the Strang Room, University College London. They were both included in the Ben Uri Gallery exhibition, Whitechapel at War: Isaac Rosenberg and his Circle in the spring of 2008. The present drawing appears in the exhibition catalogue.
