Catalogue Note

Frost's watercolour is a copy after Titian's oil painting Danaë that the Venetian master executed for Alessando Farnese between 1544 and 1546. The painting is now in the collection of the Galleries Nazionali di Capodimonte, Naples.

The scene depicts the moment when the daughter of Acrisius, who has been locked in a bronze tower in order to protect her from the advances of Jupiter, is ravished nonetheless by the father of the gods who has transformed himself into a shower of gold.
