Condition
The colours are clear, although there is evidence of some minor fading to some of the pigments, this is particularly noticeable in the sky. The paper, in general, has not discoloured. However, there is a very minor brown line, located at the extreme edges of the sheet, which is associated with previous mounting. The sheet has been laid down onto an original backing card. Overall the watercolour has been well preserved.

Catalogue Note
Edward Lear first visited Lugano, Switzerland in 1837 during a walking tour of the Como area. This was the first of numerous visits to Northern Italy and Switzerland, culminating in a permanent move to San Remo in March 1871. Lear spent the summer of 1885 in the Brianza region of Northern Italy only twenty kilometres from Lake Lugano. He described the area as 'beautiful [and] blessed' (see Vivien Noakes, Edward Lear: The Life of a Wanderer, 1968, p. 305). Painted only three years before his death, this watercolour illustrates that Lear's artistic powers did not disminish in the latter part of his life.
