Condition

The colours are very strong and fresh. The paper has not discoloured. In a raking light it is possible to see one or two very subtle rubbed lines. However, these can only be seen on very close inspection. Just to the left of the centre of the composition there are several very minor curved scratched lines. These, although just noticeable on close inspection, in no way disrupt the image. Overall the work has been very well preserved.

Catalogue Note

Muller holidayed briefly in Lynmouth, North Devon in 1844, following his return from Lycia.  He was accompanied by his brother and William 'Waterfall' West (1801-1861) another Bristol artist. Although this was the only known occasion he visited the area, he was 'charmed with its quiet beauty' and felt it was like 'taking a dose of medicine' after his adventures abroad (see Cyril Bunt, The Art and Life of William James Muller 1812-1845, 1948, p.47).
