Catalogue Note

Palmer visited North Wales in 1835, 1836 and 1837.  On his first visit he was accompanied by Edward Calvert and Henry Walter and in 1836 by Calvert alone.  He is known to have been at Beddgelert in 1836, but may well have visited there on each of the other tours. A view of Cusop Dingle near Hay-on-Wye dated 24th June 1837 is also on grey paper as is a View on the River Machawy which was dated 5th July 1837.  This watercolour may, therefore, have been drawn on the 1837 tour.

The reverse of the sheet bears the name John in brown ink written with a very large quill.  It has been suggested that the drawing was a present from the artist to his cousin, John Giles, who at that time began collecting Palmer sketches.
