Condition
Overall the condition of this work is good. The panel has suffered from some bowing, but otherwise it appears to be in its original condition. The painted surface appears to be in good condition. Catalogue Note
The Barber and Pritt families were well known to David Cox. Charles Barber (1784-1854), who is discussed in detail within the introduction (see p. 52), was an artist and close friend, while Mr Pritt was Cox's curate, or his brother, during the 1840s. These relationships are described in a letter dated the 12th January 1849 when Cox writes: 'my old friend Barber, of Liverpool, is at Bettws with two of his daughters and a brother of Mr Pritts, our curate'.
