Condition

the paper is slightly discoloured, fully mounted on Japanese rice paper and expertly restored overall one restoration visible in the lower right corner as can be seen on the illustration in the catalogue as a dark-yellowish coloured spot (diameter approximately 1,5 cm.), some unobtrusive tears expertly restored along the edges, a printers crease (circa 12 cm.) in part of the salad leaves, several unobtrusive and expertly restored cracks and creases in the middle due to a formal horizontal folding line in the paper only visible on the reverse under bright light.

Catalogue Note

This poster earned Dutch Art Nouveau it's famous nickname slaoliestijl (salad oil style) and is regarded as the icon of Dutch advertising art.

The poster exists in three different combinations of colours, 6a yellow and black, 6b lilac and yellow-green and 6c red-brown and yellow-green, our copy the 6b.

Toorop's Indonesian background is traceable in the poster here offered in the elongated and stylised figures with their patterned dresses evoking Indonesian shadow puppets (Wajang figures), the elongated hands of the figures reminiscent of the use of the curved hands with outstretched fingers in Indonesian / Balinese dance
