Catalogue Note
A crisp and elegant copy of Metastasio's libretto, set to music by the Neapolitan Traetta in 1764 for performance in Padua, and published to commemorate the performance held in St Petersburg on the eighth anniversary of Catherine's coronation. Traetta was appointed musical director at the court of Catherine the Great in 1768, where he gave singing lessons and directed the opera.
There was also a version with parallel text in Italian and Russian printed simultaneously; both versions are rare.
