first edition. Harvey's treatise on embryology radically proposed that each living thing develops from an egg rather than being preformed, thus overturning the dominant doctrine held since antiquity, and he also noted the similarity between viviparous and oviparous animals (the ovum was not actually discovered until 1827). Most of his observations were based on deer and chickens. This is also the first work on obstetrics to be written by an Englishman.
