Catalogue Note

This endearing image depicts Mishka's uproarious nuptials. The accompanying verse text describes the love-struck Mishka's clodhopping performance on the dance floor. Although his dancing was clumsy, it seems Mishka was a more than accompished host. The ursine guests were treated to a lavish party with mountains of food and vast amounts of vodka. Indeed we are told that a four day recovery period was required and that the party was still the talk of the town five years later.

Mishka, a diminutive of Mikhail, has long been a popular nickname for the animal that symbolises Russia. Mishka appears as a character in various Russian folk tales: in one story clumsily waltzing at a state banquet whilst inebriated.
