Catalogue Note
Aleksandr Mikhailovich (1866-1933) was a grandson of Tsar Nicholas I and brother-in-law of Nicholas II. He travelled extensively in his youth, visiting China and Brazil, and served as a naval officer with the Russian Fleet. The present work includes dramatic depictions of various yachts, cruisers and gun ships in the fleet with technical information on the verso of each plate. Aleksandr Mikhailovich was evacuated from the Crimea, appropriately by the British battleship HMS Marlborough, in 1917, settled in the USA and penned three volumes of autobiography (Once a Grand Duke, Twilight of Royalty and Always a Grand Duke).
