Catalogue Note

Lee Bontecou won a Fulbright Scholarship in 1956 which enabled her to study in Rome.  She had become increasingly focussed on sculpture, first at the Art Students League in New York and then at Skowhegan, Maine, where she had a summer residency.

In Rome, she experimented in several sculptural media, including lost-wax bronze; adopting animals, particularly birds, as a motif.  The present work is from this group of bronze birds, each unique; some were included in a solo exhibition, held at the G Gallery, New York, after her return in 1958.
