Catalogue Note

Antony Gormley exhibited at the ICA as part of the landmark
exhibition Objects and Sculpture, 1981, which also included Richard
Deacon, Anish Kapoor and Bill Woodrow amongst others. He later
exhibited in State of the Art, 1987, and donated a work for the ICA's
auction in 1997.

The work Domain LXIV, 2008, is a new piece that Gormley has created specifically for the ICA, and which forms a part of the Domain series which the artist started in 1999. "How do you evoke the body as a place rather than a thing – a place of awareness open to the changing conditions of weather? How do you express energy without
illustrating muscular movement? The Domain was a breakthrough
substituting space and light for mass and structure. There is no skin,
each of those trajectories stops where the skin was: internal antennae charting the place where we all live - the other side of appearance. There was a lot of experimentation, but the Domains really got going when I realised I could describe the space of the body as a matrix formed from eight lengths of stainless steel." Gormley describes the series as "an attempt to separate the subtle from the material body, to abstract an attitude and expose it to light and space."

The ICA was where it all began: Objects and Sculpture in 1981 launched a whole group of us and ever since I think of it as a place where things are first seen, talked about and argued over. It is the avantgarde forum closest to the establishment
and as such a precious counter-culture nesting box, long may it thrive! (Antony Gormley, 2008)
