Condition

This work is in very good condition. There are scattered spot losses along the pull margins and corners. Additionally, there is an 1/8 inch paint loss located approximately 1/8 inch from the left edge and ΒΌ inch from the bottom edge, as visible in the catalogue illustration. The visible, unprimed canvas in the lower right corner and in a few scattered spots throughout the composition appear inherent to the artist's working method. Under UV light inspection, there is no evidence of restoration. Framed.

Catalogue Note

"Warhol also relished the fact, for many Americans, Mao's face symbolized an alien and threatening form of government, which he accurately and perversely predicted would make his portrait more appealing to capitalist collector in the West. [...] Mao would never have tolerated an artist as frivolous as Warhol, whose humor and irony would have undermined the 'revolutionary spirit' of the masses." (David Bourdon, Warhol, New York, 1989, p. 317)
