Condition

This work is in very good condition overall. The surface has recently benefited from a light topical cleaning by Amann + Estabrook Conservation. The richly-textured surface is stable. There is evidence of some wear particularly at the edges of the masonite and a small and unobtrusive abrasion along the extreme bottom edge located approximately 6 in. from the right edge. There is no apparent evidence of restoration visible when examined under UV light. This work is framed.

Catalogue Note

"Regarding the two rhythms in painting – the movement of forms coming together, and forms separating, I worry about what states and in what conditions they can be represented. At times individual forms will appear and exist as if they are independent from their source and have a life of their own. But this is a necessary disguise, for they come from an invisible core and magnetically return to their source." - Philip Guston
