Condition

Colour: The colours in the catalogue illustration are fairly accurate although the overall tonality is slightly deeper and richer in the original with the ochre tending more towards caramel brown and the flesh tones of the sitter's face to pink in the original. Condition: This work is in good condition. There is some light wear to the centre of the top edge and a small light rub mark towards the bottom of the right extreme edge. There is a fine matrix of craquelure to the centre of the lower right quadrant and a number of fine hairline cracks scattered in a few isolated places, including to the extreme edges and to the upper part of the canvas. There is some slight wear to the centre of the top extreme edge. Examination under ultra-violet light reveals a line of retouching to the right side of the top extreme edge, one to the left side of the lower edge, four vertical retouchings in the lower right quadrant and some further small retouchings elsewhere.
