Catalogue Note

Peter Blake first exhibited at the ICA in 1958, in Five Young Painters. Subsequently he exhibited in the three-person exhibition Sculpture Objects Libraries, 1960, alongside Theo Crosby and John Latham; in Young Contemporaries, 1961; in The Obsessive Image 1960-1968, 1968; and in Comic Iconoclasm, 1987.

Artist and Model is from a new body of printed works on canvas featuring Blake's signature collage style, typically incorporating icons and ephemera from popular culture. This work features two 1950s pin-ups, of the type associated with Esquire magazine. One girl is accessorised with a pot of paint brushes, while the other is perched on a swing, and the two of them assume the roles of artist and muse.

"Over the years I have attended many exhibitions, events and films at the ICA (I saw Captain Pugwash at least 30 times as the support film while taking my daughters to films there). Here's to at least another 60 years!"  Peter Blake, 2008
