Catalogue Note

Tacita Dean first exhibited at the ICA as part of New Contemporaries in 1992. Following this she was included in the three-person exhibition
Mise en Scene, 1994, alongside Virginia Nimarkoh and Claude Cahun– the surrealist photographic portraits of the latter influenced Dean's work for the exhibition.

Czech Photos, 1991/2002, documents a journey to Prague which Dean undertook in the early 90s. The work features three hundred
photographs by the artist, images which follow her distracted gaze as it roams over details of the city – people, façades, windows, roads, bars and woods – and which form a document of Prague shortly after the Velvet Revolution, and before its economic and social reorientation. The images are placed in a box, and the viewer is invited to sit and sift through them.
