Catalogue Note

The German artist Isa Genzken was the recipient of the Wolfgang-Hahn-Award Cologne in 2002. The Gesellschaft für Moderne Kunst acquired on this occasion her important sculpture Venice, 1993.

Paul Erik Tøjner, director of the Louisiana Museum Humlebaek, was invited as guest juror to the Wolfgang-Hahn-Award Cologne in 2002. In his laudatio he spoke about Isa Genzken´s play with absence/presence: "Confronted with Isa Genzken´s seismographic work one gets acutely aware of one´s exposure. It is only in this awareness that her work can be perceived as an answer to the question it is asking. Genzken said about her works in big spaces, in public spaces: the aim is to do something what is missing at this specific location, at this place. It is of course a punchline that the work of art is compensating the deficit by making it visible. In this sense Isa Genzken is giving the answer by asking the question."
